Morocco didn’t quite match what they did in 2022 at this year’s World Cup.

Three years ago they reached the semi-finals. This time they went out in the quarters.

But look a bit closer at how they got there, because it tells you plenty.

They came through a tough group on seven points, level with Brazil, and only missed top spot on goal difference.

Then they beat the Netherlands on penalties, saw off Canada 3-0, and only went out to France, the tournament favourites, in the quarter-final.

There was a record ten African teams at this World Cup, and Morocco were the only one to get that far.

Getting knocked out by France is nothing to be ashamed of. Reaching back-to-back quarter-finals as an African side is something that hasn’t been done before.

Which is the part worth talking about.

Africa’s World Cup history

Africa has been going to World Cups since 1934, and in all that time only three teams had ever reached a quarter-final before Morocco came along. Cameroon did it in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010. One semi-final, which was Morocco’s own in 2022, and not a single final in ninety years.

Back in 1977, Pelé said an African nation would be world champions by the year 2000. He was pretty confident about it. It didn’t happen, and it still hasn’t.

The strange thing is that the talent was never the problem. At the last proper count from CIES, more than 500 African players were on the books at clubs across Europe. Nigeria alone has won the U-17 World Cup a record five times. The players have always been there.

What was missing was a system to turn all of that into a team that actually goes deep. That is the gap Morocco set out to fill, and they started a long time ago.

How Morocco actually did it

In 2008, King Mohammed VI told the country’s national sports conference to stop waiting around for talent to appear and start building the setup that would produce it. The BBC covered the shift at the time.

A year later the Mohammed VI academy opened, built for around $14 million. And here is a detail worth holding onto: the King didn’t pay for it on his own. The telecoms company Maroc Télécom and the bank Attijariwafa helped fund it, according to Niya Maghribia. That is private national money going into a football project years before anyone knew it would work.

It paid off. Nayef Aguerd, Azzedine Ounahi and Youssef En-Nesyri all came through that academy, and all three were central to the 2022 run.

Then the federation caught up. When Fouzi Lekjaa took over in 2014, Morocco built a proper diaspora scouting network, with people stationed across France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and beyond, as Morocco World News reported. At the same time they laid something like 7,000 amateur pitches at home and put real effort into developing their own coaches.

So one side of the operation grows players at home. The other finds Moroccan talent wherever in Europe it happens to be born. Running both at once is basically the whole idea.

You can see it in the numbers. Morocco’s 1998 squad had two foreign-born players. By 2022 it was fourteen out of twenty-six, and this summer they put out the first entirely foreign-born starting eleven in their history, drawing on research from Oxford’s COMPAS.

None of this is a brand new concept, by the way. Plenty of teams have leaned on diaspora players before. Some of Morocco’s own, like Hakim Ziyech and Sofyan Amrabat, came through the Dutch youth setup and then chose Morocco. What is different is that Morocco paired that recruitment with the academy and the federation work, instead of relying on it on its own.

So could anyone else do this?

That is the interesting question, because the blueprint is right there for everyone to see.

The lesson from the teams who haven’t managed it is pretty clear. Nigeria has produced more young talent than almost anyone and still missed the last two World Cups, which tells you talent on its own isn’t enough. Algeria has recruited its French-born players for years but never built the institutions around them, and The Conversation’s read is that diaspora talent without that structure eventually hits a ceiling. Morocco is the only one that built both halves.

Senegal is the obvious team to look at next. They have the quality, they won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, and they reached the final again in 2025. If any African side has the raw material to build the same kind of system, it is them.

The frustrating thing, if you are anyone other than Morocco, is that there is no secret here. The academy, the scouting, the pitches, the recruitment, all of it has been done in the open. Anyone can copy it.

Seventeen years on, nobody has really.

Start with the viewing figures.

FIFA’s audit of the 2022 final found that more than 1.4 billion people watched at least one minute of Argentina against France, with an average live audience of 571 million.

(The 1.5 billion figure quoted everywhere is FIFA’s total reach across television, streaming and public viewing, not simultaneous viewers. The distinction is worth noting.)

To put that in context: this year’s Super Bowl averaged 125.6 million viewers (Nielsen), and that was the second most-watched in its history.

The World Cup final’s average audience is more than four times that. No single fixture in any sport comes close.

Those are the headline figures. Now follow what they convert into.

Fox paid $485 million for the US English-language rights to this tournament. Together with Telemundo’s Spanish-language deal, the American market alone is reported to be worth around $1.25 billion to FIFA.

And here’s the detail most people don’t know: Fox never had to bid for it. When FIFA moved Qatar 2022 to November, straight into the NFL season, it handed Fox and Telemundo the 2026 rights without a tender, widely reported at the time as compensation to head off a legal fight.

The advertising market shows what those rights are now worth. Fox’s top sponsorship packages for this tournament have reportedly ranged from $15 million to $50 million, with Telemundo’s biggest deals at $20 million to $30 million (Adweek). Thirty-second spots for the biggest matches have been projected north of $1-2 million (Front Office Sports).

Regular readers will remember our piece on hydration breaks earlier this summer. That’s this same story: when the audience is this large, broadcasters will invent new inventory inside the match itself to sell against it.

Sponsorship

FIFA’s sponsorship revenue for this cycle is projected at $2.4 billion+, roughly 37% up on Qatar 2022 (SportsPro).

But the more interesting shift is in who is paying.

In 2022, the newest names on FIFA’s sponsor board were Crypto.com, the edtech firm Byju’s, and QatarEnergy. Byju’s has since collapsed into insolvency. The crypto gold rush cooled. That slate reflected who had money to spend in 2021, and how loosely it was being spent.

Look at the 2026 board. Bank of America, FIFA’s first global banking partner, in what is reportedly the largest sports investment the bank has ever made. Verizon, covering network operations across all 11 US host cities. Lenovo. And Saudi Aramco, a worldwide partner in a deal reported at $100 million per year (Fossil Free Football).

American corporates and Saudi state oil, replacing crypto and edtech.

Sponsor boards are a map of who football’s biggest event is being staged for. This one reads: the US market and Gulf capital. Which, not coincidentally, is also the story of where the next few World Cups are likely to be played.

And, the World Cup final and the level of attention and endorsement it draws in is exactly the type of logic applied when these companies choose to back these tournaments in the first place.

Prize Money

The prize money is the smallest part.

Against those numbers, the money on the pitch looks modest.

The 2026 champion earns up to $51 million from FIFA’s record $871 million prize pool, with the runner-up taking $34 million.

That pool has nearly doubled from $440 million in Qatar. But the result on Sunday still only swings $17 million, small change next to what the fixture generates for FIFA.

And that money doesn’t go to the players. It goes to the federations, and every country negotiates its own player bonuses from there, which is why winning the World Cup pays a player very differently depending on their country.

The players’ clubs, meanwhile, get their own cut. Under FIFA’s Club Benefits Programme, clubs are paid at least $5,000 per player per day for releasing them to the tournament, from a fund of $355 million, up 70% on 2022 (FIFA).

Every player on the pitch on Sunday is earning money for their employer simply by being there. That is how thoroughly this event has been financed.

The difference for the 2026 World Cup Final

Everything above would be true of any recent World Cup final. Four things are true only of this one.

1. FIFA runs the whole show. For the first time in the tournament’s history, there is no local organising committee. FIFA is staging the World Cup itself and dealing directly with its host cities, and the revenue from the final, the tickets, the hospitality, the sponsorship, flows straight to Zurich. Fortune estimates the tournament will bring FIFA around $8.9 billion.

2. There is a halftime show. Ninety-six years of World Cup finals, and this is the first with one. Curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, with a reported line-up including Justin Bieber, Madonna, Shakira, BTS and Burna Boy.

3. The tickets were priced like airline seats. We covered FIFA’s move to dynamic pricing earlier in this series, and the final is where it lands. Category 1 tickets launched at $6,730 and were later revised to close to $11,000 as demand data came in. FIFA also takes a 15% commission on its own resale platform, a practice now under subpoena from the New York and New Jersey attorneys general. This is the most expensive final in World Cup history, by a distance

4. It is being played in an NFL stadium, and FIFA is selling the pitch. No Maracanã, no Wembley, no purpose-built national stadium. The biggest match in football belongs, for one afternoon, to the home of the New York Jets and Giants, on a temporary grass surface that cost around $13 million to install (The Athletic). When the tournament ends, that surface comes up, and FIFA is selling it by the piece at $450 as official merchandise (NJ1015, ABC7). No World Cup final pitch has been sold off square by square before.

Put those four together and the pattern is difficult to miss.

An event run entirely by the rights holder. A halftime spectacle. Market-priced tickets. An NFL venue. Merchandise cut from the playing surface itself.

FIFA has not simply brought the World Cup to America. It has remade the final in the format of America’s biggest sporting products.

And commercially, it is hard to argue with. The Super Bowl is one of the most efficient revenue machine in sport, and FIFA now controls its own version of it end to end, with no host committee taking a share.

Every story we covered this summer was, in the end, the same story. Dynamic pricing. Host cities carrying costs for a tournament they no longer share in. Sponsor categories locked up before local businesses could move. And now a final where even the turf carries a price tag.

The World Cup used to be a football tournament that made money.

In 2026, it is a money machine that stages football.

“This will put your city on the map”

When the American host cities were negotiating with FIFA, the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission asked a fair question: what exactly do the cities get out of this?

FIFA’s executives had an answer ready.

“Hosting this tournament will put your city on the map.”

That’s Los Angeles. Host of the 1984 Olympics. Host of the 1994 World Cup. Host of the 2028 Olympics.

The Athletic’s Adam Crafton reported that exchange, and it tells you almost everything about the business of this World Cup.

Because FIFA was selling cities the one thing they didn’t need, while quietly keeping the thing they did.

The city hosting the final is budgeting for a loss

Start with New York.

The World Cup final is being played at MetLife Stadium. The kind of fixture cities supposedly dream about.

New York City’s own comptroller ran the numbers this spring.

Even if FIFA’s forecast of 1.2 million visitors fully shows up, the extra tax revenue flowing to the city tops out at about $55 million.

The city’s added costs, for the NYPD, emergency management and small-business support, are on track to hit roughly $70 million.

That’s a loss in the optimistic scenario. If fewer visitors turn up, the gap widens.

And the visitors are wobbling. By May, 80% of hoteliers across the 11 US host markets reported bookings below forecast (Fortune). New York’s World Cup weeks were tracking behind the same dates in 2025, a year with no tournament at all.

So the host of the final loses money on paper. Sit with that for a second.

Hosts have always lost money. Here’s why they didn’t mind.

None of this is new, by the way.

Research from the University of Toronto found that 12 of the last 14 World Cups produced net economic losses for their host regions.

Brazil spent around $11.5 billion on the 2014 tournament, roughly 85% of it public money, and was left with stadiums nobody needed.

Russia spent somewhere between $11.8 billion and $14.2 billion for 2018.

And, obliterating previous records, Qatar spent an estimated $220 billion for 2022, more than every previous World Cup combined.

And here’s the thing: they were fine with it.

Because they weren’t buying an economic return. They were buying prestige.

Russia wanted to look like a global power again. Qatar wanted to introduce itself to the world of football. Crafton calls both tournaments what they were: nation-building projects.

Losing money was the price of the billboard. Everyone understood the trade.

So why don’t hosts make money?

Sports economist Victor Matheson has studied these events for nearly three decades, and he gives three reasons (Fortune).

Substitution. A local fan hasn’t grown their entertainment budget because the World Cup is in town. The $410 they spend on a ticket is $410 they don’t spend on the Red Sox, the museum, or the restaurant down the road.

Crowding out. The tournament displaces the tourists a city would have had anyway. During the Paris Olympics the hotels were full, but Paris hotels are always full in summer, and attendance at the Louvre fell by about 25%.

Leakage. And this is the killer. When a fan spends $400 on a World Cup ticket, that money goes to FIFA. It doesn’t touch a local business, and it never recirculates through the local economy.

As Matheson puts it: that $400 would have done more for the city if the fan had spent it on basically anything else.

What makes 2026 different

Here’s the part that matters.

For most of the tournament’s history, a World Cup was run by a local organising committee. The host absorbed the costs, but it also shared in the upside.

Not this time. For the first time ever, FIFA is running the tournament itself, dealing directly with the 16 host cities across the US, Mexico and Canada.

Under that structure, FIFA controls essentially all of the revenue: tickets, media rights, sponsorship, hospitality, merchandise. The cities control the costs.

Fortune put it in plain business terms: a franchise model where the franchisees pay to run the business and the franchisor keeps the receipts.

Look at the numbers on each side of that ledger.

FIFA is set to collect an estimated $8.9 billion from this World Cup. Gianni Infantino promised to quadruple FIFA’s income when he ran for president in 2016, and this is how he gets there.

The 11 US host cities, meanwhile, face a collective shortfall of up to $250 million, with each expected to shoulder $100 million to $200 million in security, transport, stadium retrofits and fan zones.

And the costs hide everywhere once you start looking. The Athletic found a $25.8 million temporary jail in Kansas City. A $15 million broadcast centre in Dallas that gets torn down when the tournament ends. A $13 million pitch injection at MetLife so the final has grass worthy of it.

Then there’s the tax. FIFA made sales-tax exemptions on tickets a condition of hosting. Georgia alone expects to lose up to $25 million on Atlanta’s matches, and Missouri, Georgia and Florida are waiving a combined $57.8 million.

Cities were told they could sell local sponsorships to cover their costs. Then FIFA locked up the categories for its own partners, so cities couldn’t even sign a convenience-store chain, because its food sales clashed with McDonald’s.

The old deal was: lose money, share the upside, buy prestige.

The new deal is: lose money.

The takeaway

None of this means the World Cup is worthless to a host.

The 1994 tournament fell billions short of its economic projections, and it still gave America Major League Soccer. Some legacies don’t show up on a comptroller’s spreadsheet.

But the honest version of the story is this.

For decades, hosts lost money on the World Cup and got something real in exchange: prestige, attention, a new place in the world’s imagination.

In 2026, FIFA sold that same loss to cities that already had all three.

Host cities were told the World Cup would put them on the map.

Turns out they’re the ones paying for the ink.

German football has seen its fair share of dramatic downfalls in recent times, with the likes of FC Schalke 04 and VfL Wolfsburg dominating headlines having traversed from Champions League escapades to relegation ruin over the past few decades.

Before all that however, it was 1. FC Kaiserslautern who were among the first to show signs of spiralling uncontrollably down the football pyramid - from winning two Bundesliga titles in 1991 and 1998 to playing in the German third tier just twenty years later.

Founded in 1900, 1. FC Kaiserslautern rose to prominence after the Second World War under the leadership of legendary captain Fritz Walter. The club won German championships in 1951 and 1953, while several Kaiserslautern players formed the core of West Germany’s 1954 World Cup-winning squad.

As one of the Bundesliga’s founding members in 1963, the club remained competitive and later enjoyed another golden era in the early 1990s, winning the DFB-Pokal in 1990 before securing the Bundesliga title in 1991 and again in 1998 when, led by manager Otto Rehhagel, they became the first and only newly promoted team to win the Bundesliga immediately after earning promotion from the second division.

This remarkable success cemented the club’s place in German football history and demonstrated how effective management, strong team spirit and tactical discipline could overcome financial limitations and adversity.

Recruitment and Managerial Changes

Player recruitment and managerial decisions played a significant role in both the club’s success and eventual decline.

During its strongest years, Kaiserslautern consistently identified talented yet affordable players who suited the club’s disciplined style of play.

Experienced managers such as Karl-Heinz Feldkamp and Otto Rehhagel built balanced squads by blending youth with experienced professionals, creating teams capable of competing against wealthier clubs.

Shrewd acquisitions such as Olaf Marschall, Ciriaco Sforza, Ratinho, Michael Schjønberg, Petr Kouba and a young Michael Ballack were key in that 1998 Bundesliga title, and were followed up by the arrivals of Miroslav Klose, Youri Djorkaeff and record signing Lincoln which helped the club enjoy a 10-year spell in the top flight.

However, following the early 2000s, recruitment became increasingly inconsistent - the club failed to invest when the going was good, while promising academy graduates were sold to ease financial pressures.

Frequent managerial changes further destabilised the club, in particular the departure of Otto Rehhagel who famously went on to lead Greece to Euro 2004 glory, and with each new coach introducing different tactical ideas and transfer priorities, squad continuity suffered, resulting in declining performances on the pitch and a loss of the clear identity that had once defined the Red Devils.

Ownership and Board Influence

Equally damaging were the decisions made by the club’s board and ownership.

Following years of sporting success, ambitious spending on wages, aging players and the expansion of the Fritz-Walter-Stadion placed enormous financial pressure on the club.

The stadium redevelopment for the 2006 FIFA World Cup left Kaiserslautern with significant debt, while repeated failures to secure Bundesliga promotion reduced television revenue and commercial income.

Boardroom instability, disagreements over financial strategy and unsuccessful investment decisions further worsened the situation.

Although former club legend Stefan Kuntz initially helped stabilise the club and guided them back to the Bundesliga in 2010, financial problems continued to bubble beneath the surface and eventually those years of poor governance contributed to insolvency proceedings in 2020, highlighting how off-field decisions can be just as influential as performances on the pitch.

Signs of Recovery

The club’s recent history has been defined by decline but also signs of a resurgence of sorts in Southwestern German.

Despite a devastating drop to the 3. Liga in 2018, the unwavering support of its fanbase kept the club alive during difficult times and promotion back to the 2. Bundesliga in 2022 marked an important turning point, with the team establishing itself as a competitive second-tier side while continuing efforts to improve its financial stability.

Although a return to the Bundesliga remains a work in progress, Kaiserslautern’s rich tradition, loyal supporters and renewed organisational focus suggest that the club is slowly rebuilding its reputation after years of decline.

The recent sale of star striker Ragnar Ache to 1. FC Köln was their highest value departure since Klose left for Werder Bremen in 2004, and if the funds earned are reinvested appropriately then Kaiserslautern fans will be optimistic that better days are yet to come for Die Roten Teufel.

The story of 1. FC Kaiserslautern is a reminder that success in football depends on more than talent alone.

The club's historic achievements were built upon exceptional leadership, smart recruitment and a strong connection with its community, while its decline resulted from financial mismanagement, inconsistent planning and instability both on and off the pitch.

Despite experiencing one of the most dramatic falls in German football, the Red Devils remain a symbol of perseverance and hope that one day they can return to the heights that once made them one of Germany's greatest football clubs.

It’s also on course to be the most lucrative. FIFA’s marketing and sponsorship revenue for this cycle is projected to comfortably top a record $1.78bn (SportBusiness), part of a roughly $14bn four-year haul FIFA says it’ll mostly plough back into the game.

A chunk of that record is being contributed by an oil company.

But not many seem to be talking about it.

So who exactly is Aramco?

Saudi Aramco is the world’s largest oil producer, worth somewhere around $1.6 trillion and, for a spell after its 2019 float, the most valuable listed company on Earth.

It is 98.5% owned by the Saudi state.

It is also the world’s single largest corporate greenhouse gas emitter, responsible for more than 4% of all global emissions since 1965. This is more than the entire United Kingdom.

In 2024 alone it accounted for 4.28% of global CO₂, more than any other company on the planet (Carbon Majors database, via the LA Times).

It pumps over 12 million barrels of oil a day, and just 0.01% of the energy it produces is renewable (Fossil Free Football).

Its CEO, Amin Nasser, told an industry conference in 2024 that the world should “abandon the fantasy of phasing out oil and gas.”

This is not a company quietly hedging towards a green future. This is the fossil-fuel business, at maximum volume, putting its name on the most-watched event in the world.

First it was F1. Then it came for football.

Aramco’s route into sport is worth tracing, because it tells you this is a strategy, not a one-off.

In March 2020, it became Formula 1’s sixth global partner. Instant access to an “engaged audience of 500 million fans,” title rights to three Grands Prix, branding on every straight.

That same spring, the UK advertising regulator received 60+ complaints about an Aramco campaign claiming it was “powering a more sustainable future.” Aramco pulled the ad (ClientEarth).

The sport push kept going: cricket’s ICC, women’s golf, a Saudi club in Al-Qadsiah.

Then, on 25 April 2024, the big one. FIFA named Aramco a Major Worldwide Partner — the top tier — with exclusive rights in the energy category across the 2026 men’s and 2027 women’s World Cups.

The fee was never disclosed. Experts estimate around $100m a year, roughly $400m across the deal (LA Times).

For context on the broader play: fossil-fuel firms have poured over £4bn into sports sponsorship, and Aramco is the single biggest spender, with nearly £1bn across ten active deals (New Weather Institute, via the BBC).

The pushback.

This is the part FIFA would rather you didn’t notice.

Within weeks of the 2024 announcement, more than 130 professional women’s footballers from 27 countries signed an open letter demanding FIFA drop the deal.

Their line is hard to forget: “This sponsorship is much worse than an own goal. FIFA might as well pour oil on the pitch and set it alight.”

In May 2026, health, climate and sports-science experts warned that actively promoting fossil fuels creates “a conflict of interest with the protection of player welfare.”

And as the tournament kicked off, climate activists — Sierra Club, Third Act, Hip Hop Caucus among them — staged a day of action outside five World Cup stadiums, from SoFi in LA to Hard Rock in Miami.

Madeleine Orr, a sport-ecology academic at the University of Toronto, put it bluntly: having Aramco as a worldwide sponsor “completely undermines any credibility FIFA has, or could have had, around sustainability claims.”

So why would an oil company sponsor the World Cup?

There’s a more obvious answer, and then the more interesting one.

Familiarity with everyone. The World Cup is the most-watched event on Earth. Roughly 1.5 billion people watched the 2022 final alone. You cannot buy that kind of eyeball count anywhere else.

Familiarity that lasts. A World Cup memory is a lifelong one. Sponsors get woven into the highlight reels, the background of a generation’s summer. It’s marketing that doesn’t expire and because the spectacle is so beloved, almost no one tied to it gets seen in a bad light.

They’re not trying to sell you oil. And this is the key. Aramco isn’t running boards in Dallas hoping you’ll fill up at one of its forecourts.

Fossil-fuel advertising works differently. As Fossil Free Football’s Frank Huisingh argues, it’s “not really about selling us our next product… but about building influence and soft power. Aramco is using the largest platform on earth to spread its message.”

The lazy word for this is sportswashing. And it is, to be fair, accurate.

Amnesty International says Saudi Arabia, largely through its wealth fund, has spent billions on sportswashing to distract from a record of executions, jailed activists and suppressed dissent.

But it would be too simple to stop at that word.

Because the deeper goal, as the Guardian’s Oscar Berglund puts it, is to make fossil capital feel like “a necessary evil, so embedded that we cannot imagine life…without it.”

In other words: Aramco isn’t washing one bad weekend. It’s buying permanence the quiet idea that oil is just part of football, part of life, not going anywhere.

It also wants to be in the room. The same World Cup that hosts the football hosts the executives, the billionaires, the world leaders. In short, the people Aramco most wants to rub shoulders with. Its ROI, one sponsorship expert noted, is measured in “reputation of the company…how the brand Saudi Arabia has improved.”

This is soft power for a state that, at the COP climate talks, is “widely regarded as the worst blocker of climate action.”

And then there’s 2034.

Here’s the thread that ties it all together.

The 2034 World Cup is going to Saudi Arabia, confirmed in December 2024 through an uncontested bid, after FIFA conveniently restricted eligibility to Asia and Oceania. Reporting suggests FIFA president Gianni Infantino personally helped bend the rules to get there.

So join the dots.

The Saudi state owns Aramco. Aramco is now FIFA’s marquee partner across 2026 and 2027. Saudi Arabia hosts the whole thing in 2034.

As one sponsorship expert flatly noted, it’s “common practice for state-owned companies in future host countries to sponsor events such as the World Cup.”

This isn’t a coincidence of branding.

What can we actually do?

Not much, on our own. That’s the honest answer.

But the playbook exists, and it’s the one that beat Big Tobacco.

Keep naming it. Keep condemning it. Make it so that no matter how good the football is, associating with these companies stops being a clean, costless win.

It’s slow. It’s easier said than done. But the alternative is to shrug, enjoy the spectacle, and let the logo become wallpaper.

Aramco bought into the World Cup to sell you the idea that you have no choice but to keep burning fossil fuels.

“Stranger things have happened than the prospect of Messi vs Pico Lopes – but not many”

There is a Shamrock Rovers centre-back at the World Cup.

Not watching it. Playing in it.

Roberto “Pico” Lopes is in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup with Cape Verde, and next up is Lionel Messi’s Argentina.

You probably already know how he got there. The now-famous LinkedIn message from a Cape Verde manager that sat ignored as suspected spam, the Google Translate call-up, the dad from Cape Verde and the mam from Dublin. We’ve covered his background before, and frankly so has half the planet by now.

So we won’t dwell on it.

What’s harder to look away from is what’s happening back home.

While his family back home cheer him on, a large portion of Irish population have gathered too.

On Aisling Close in Crumlin, neighbours have been watching his games on an inflatable screen propped against a wall, with a projector borrowed from the local school.

Shamrock Rovers fans have also rallied around one of their own.

And here’s the part worth sitting with: a lot of those Rovers supporters aren’t old enough to remember Ireland at a World Cup. Some of them weren’t even born for it.

Ireland last graced a World Cup in 2002.

That’s why this connection matters so much to football culture in this country. For a chunk of a generation, this is the closest they’ve come to having someone of their own on that stage.

But, in the interest of full disclosure, I was three months old myself the last time Ireland were at a World Cup.

So I won’t be pretending to yearn for the days of Saipan anytime soon.

And, here’s the thing some people are still underrating: Cape Verde were never supposed to be here.

The pre-tournament numbers gave them somewhere around a 1% chance of getting out of their group.

This is a country of roughly 525,000 people. One of the smallest nations by land area and population ever to qualify for a World Cup.

But this didn’t come from nowhere.

Cape Verde have been quietly building for over a decade, with back-to-back quarter-final runs at the Africa Cup of Nations marking them out as serious overachievers long before now.

The qualifying campaign sealed it — top of their group, a 3-0 win over Eswatini in October 2025 booking a first-ever World Cup.

Then came the tournament itself.

A 0-0 draw with Spain. A 2-2 with Uruguay. A 0-0 with Saudi Arabia.

Second in the group, and the smallest nation in history to reach the World Cup knockout stages.

Pico has been integral to all of it.

This is where it gets interesting for us.

A player contracted to a League of Ireland club is competing — and progressing — at a World Cup.

That is proof of concept. The League produces players who can compete on the very biggest stage.

You don’t need exact figures to see the traction it’s pulling.

Look at the League of Ireland’s own social channels. A post celebrating Pico did numbers their usual content simply doesn’t.

Moments like Stephen Bradley FaceTiming him live on RTÉ became their own little events.

And even if our national broadcaster hasn’t exactly been at its best this tournament, it almost doesn’t matter because the story didn’t stay in Ireland.

FourFourTwo, ESPN, NPR, Al Jazeera, Fox — they’ve all run it.

A Crumlin lad and a tiny island nation became one of the defining feel-good stories of the World Cup.

The lesson for clubs is simple: authentic stories travel, and one player’s journey is worth more brand value than any ad campaign you could buy.

But the important thing from a marketing and branding perspective, is that the League of Ireland don’t let the momentum die with this tournament.

All of this could be fleeting.

A World Cup ends. The cameras move on. The story cools.

But the momentum is real right now and that is exactly the moment to use it to brand and market the League of Ireland for the rest of the season.

Because here’s the kicker: the second the World Cup ends, there are League of Ireland matches to actually go and watch.

Some people in Ireland don’t even realise the league plays through the summer.

That’s a genuine shame and a wide-open opportunity.

This is a recruitment pitch to every young player wondering if the domestic game can take them somewhere.

It’s a story for investors, at the exact moment outside money is starting to take Irish football seriously.

And it raises a fair question: if Pico can do this, who else in another setup could be doing the same and is the League of Ireland being taken seriously enough as a pathway?

The profile of this league is rising. We’ve written about it before, from fan ownership debates to the arrival of foreign capital.

This is another data point in the same story.

It’s disappointing, of course, that Ireland aren’t there themselves.

But to have someone born and bred here Irish to his core, even in another shirt, go and make history on that stage?

For a generation that’s never seen Ireland at a World Cup, that’s not nothing.

That might just be everything they need to fully endorse Irish football going forward.

On June 13, Brazil opened its tournament against Morocco. The match was carried in Brazil by a channel called CazéTV.

It peaked at 12.7 million concurrent viewers.

That was not just a record for the channel. It was the largest live audience in YouTube history, beating an Indian moon landing broadcast, and the first time any non-Chinese platform passed 10 million people watching the same stream at once.

CazéTV now holds six of the ten biggest live audiences YouTube has ever recorded.

And it is doing all of this for free.

Here is the part that makes traditional broadcasters nervous.

For 54 years, almost every World Cup watched by Brazilians aired on Globo.

That ended this year.

In 2026, CazéTV is the only Brazilian broadcaster showing all 104 matches. Globo is showing just over 50.

A channel that did not exist before late 2022 just out-scaled the most powerful media company in the country.

So where did it come from?

CazéTV is the creation of Casimiro Miguel, a 31-year-old from Rio de Janeiro.

He is not a TV executive. He is a streamer.

A former games journalist at Esporte Interativo, Casimiro blew up during the pandemic by sitting in front of a webcam on Twitch, reacting to reality shows, street-food videos and football, and simply talking to his audience.

His thing was never tactics. It was personality, humour and the feeling that you were watching with a mate rather than a broadcaster reading from a script.

In 2020 and 2021 he started streaming individual Brazilian league matches on Twitch, some behind a paywall, in partnership with a Rio sports marketing company called LiveMode.

LiveMode is the quiet engine behind all of this. It was founded by Edgar Diniz and Sérgio Lopes, the same pair who built Esporte Interativo years earlier, so they already understood how to grow a sports brand the giants ignored.

Then came the opening that changed everything.

No traditional Brazilian broadcaster was willing to meet FIFA’s asking price for the digital rights to the 2022 World Cup.

So LiveMode struck a deal with FIFA, and CazéTV was launched to stream 22 matches from Qatar.

The opener pulled around 1 million viewers. By Brazil’s quarter-final exit, the channel was peaking at 6.9 million.

That was the moment the model proved itself.

What followed was a land grab.

The Women’s World Cup. The 2023 Pan American Games. The Paris 2024 Olympics, where it ran over 500 hours of coverage and reached 42 million people. The 2025 Club World Cup. The Brazilian top flight. The Europa League and Conference League.

By January 2024, CazéTV was already the biggest sports channel on YouTube in Brazil.

Then the ownership changed.

In November 2025, LiveMode bought out Casimiro’s production company and took 100% of CazéTV. Casimiro did not cash out and disappear. He became a partner in the group’s global holding company instead, trading a slice of one channel for a slice of the whole machine.

And in May 2026, the machine attracted its most famous backer yet.

Cristiano Ronaldo bought a significant stake in LiveModeTV, the international arm of the business.

The terms were not disclosed. But the context tells you the scale.

Before Ronaldo arrived, General Atlantic and XP Investimentos had put an estimated R$440 million into the group for a little over 20%, implying a valuation of roughly R$2.2 billion.

So Ronaldo has not bought into just a trend.

He bought into a company built on a simple, ruthless idea: give away premium sport for free, gather an enormous audience, and sell that audience to advertisers.

Now, back to CazéTV, and the moment this week that showed exactly what makes it different.

The Vozinha story.

Cape Verde, at their first ever World Cup, held Spain to a 0-0 draw on June 15. Their hero was a 40-year-old goalkeeper called Vozinha, who turned professional late and spent most of his career in obscurity.

He went into the match with around 46,000 Instagram followers.

CazéTV, watching the saves pile up, did something a traditional broadcaster would never think to do mid-game. It pointed its audience of roughly 31 million subscribers straight at him and told them to go follow the guy.

His following hit 1 million within minutes of the final whistle.

Within 24 hours he had close to 10 million followers, more than Victor Wembanyama and Patrick Mahomes.

A broadcaster did not just cover a star. It manufactured one in real time, because it owns the audience and the distribution at the same time.

That is the bit the rest of the industry is still catching up to.

So what does CazéTV actually signal?

It signals that the old assumption, that big live sport must sit behind a TV deal or a paywall, is no longer a law of physics.

A free, ad-funded, creator-led channel can now win the rights to the single biggest sporting event on earth in one of the biggest football markets on earth, and then post the largest live audience in the platform’s history.

It also exposes how much of this opportunity the English-speaking world has ignored.

In the US and UK, premium sport keeps getting locked deeper behind subscriptions and bundles. The instinct is to charge more to fewer people.

Brazil just proved the opposite can work at enormous scale. Charge nothing, reach everyone, monetise the attention.

CazéTV did not find a loophole. It found a different business model entirely.

And yet, outside Brazil, most people have no idea this company exists.

Ask a sports fan in London or New York who broadcast the World Cup opener to nearly 13 million concurrent viewers, and you will likely get a blank look.

That gap is the whole point.

Even inside Brazil, the scale of what happened is, as one observer put it, a revolution that is still poorly understood.

The reception there has been close to euphoric. CazéTV is seen as the underdog that beat the establishment, built on trust, humour and the sense that it is on the fans’ side rather than the rights-holders’ side.

The reception outside Brazil is mostly silence, because the rest of the market has not been paying attention.

Globo, to its credit, has noticed. It launched its own free digital sports product, ge TV, in a move widely read as a direct response.

When the incumbent starts copying the disruptor, you know the disruption is real.

So here is where I think this goes.

CazéTV will not stay a Brazilian story for long.

The Ronaldo investment was specifically into the international arm. That is not an accident. The next phase is exporting the model, most likely starting in markets where football is huge and free, ad-supported streaming is underbuilt.

LaLiga rights in Brazil are already locked up until 2032. The Olympics are secured through 2028. NFL international games, table tennis, CONMEBOL highlights, the catalogue keeps widening.

The risk is obvious. The whole thing rests heavily on YouTube’s economics and on a model where rights costs keep rising while the product stays free. If ad revenue ever lags behind rights inflation, the maths gets harder.

Welcome back to World Cup Wednesday.

One of the strangest business stories of this World Cup has not come from a broadcaster, a sponsor announcement or a record ticket sale.

It came from a row of condiment bottles.

Inside Levi’s Stadium, which is not called Levi’s Stadium during the World Cup, bottles of sauce in the media area had their labels covered with black tape.

Outside the same stadium, the iconic Levi’s logo was covered with a white sheet.

Except it did not really work.

The wordmark was hidden, but the shape of the sign was still obviously Levi’s. So the brand did what smart brands do. It leaned into the absurdity, updated its social media, turned the covered logo into a joke, and arguably got more attention from being hidden than it would have from simply being visible.

That is the funny version of the story.

The business version is much more important.

FIFA is running one of the most controlled commercial environments in sport.

And at the World Cup, there is no such thing as accidental brand exposure.

The reason stadiums have different names during the World Cup is relatively simple.

FIFA sells exclusivity.

If a company pays to become an official FIFA partner, World Cup sponsor or tournament supporter, part of what it is buying is protection from rival brands appearing in official tournament environments.

That is why BMO Field becomes Toronto Stadium.

It is why Gillette Stadium becomes Boston Stadium.

It is why AT&T Stadium becomes Dallas Stadium.

It is why SoFi Stadium becomes Los Angeles Stadium.

It is why MetLife Stadium, which will host the final, becomes New York New Jersey Stadium.

To most fans, these names sound generic.

To FIFA, that is the point.

The stadium is not supposed to be a billboard for a brand that has not paid FIFA. It is supposed to be a neutral World Cup venue, surrounded by FIFA’s own sponsors, partners and approved commercial messages.

That is why the clean-up goes much further than the name above the entrance.

It includes external signage, concourses, seats, staff uniforms, scoreboards, accreditation passes, hospitality areas, parking facilities and even products sitting inside media rooms.

If a brand can be seen in a World Cup environment, FIFA wants to know who put it there and whether they paid for the right to be there.

But, this is not new.

FIFA and UEFA have applied similar rules for years. The Allianz Arena, for example, has long had to operate under different names for major international and European competition when Allianz is not an official partner.

But 2026 makes the policy more visible than ever.

That is because this World Cup is being played across the United States, Canada and Mexico, and many of the host venues are not traditional football grounds. They are NFL or multi-purpose stadiums built inside a commercial culture where naming rights are part of the architecture.

The brand is not just on the front door.

It is on the roof, the seats, the concourse, the cupholders, the payment terminals, the screens, the entrances and sometimes the identity of the building itself.

That makes a clean-stadium policy far harder to execute.

It also makes the examples much funnier.

Gillette Stadium reportedly had branding covered across its seats. Kansas City physically removed GEHA lettering from Arrowhead. Lumen Field became Seattle Stadium. Hard Rock Stadium became Miami Stadium. Philadelphia had branding covered at Lincoln Financial Field. MetLife was scrubbed outside, even if some details inside reportedly proved harder to remove.

Atlanta was one of the exceptions.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium became Atlanta Stadium in official World Cup language, but the giant Mercedes-Benz star on the roof was allowed to remain because covering or removing it without damaging the structure was not considered realistic.

That tells you everything about the scale of the job.

This is not just a name change.

It is a temporary commercial reset of some of the most heavily branded stadiums in North America.

Now, back to the cover-up.

The reason FIFA is so strict is because the World Cup sponsorship model depends on scarcity.

If every stadium naming-rights partner, local sponsor and existing venue partner could keep full visibility during the tournament, the value of official FIFA sponsorship would fall.

Why would a global partner pay huge money for exclusivity if rival brands could appear on the same broadcast, in the same stadium, around the same match?

That is especially important in 2026.

This World Cup is on course to be FIFA’s biggest commercial tournament ever. SportBusiness Sponsorship has reported that sponsorship revenue is projected to comfortably exceed a revised budget of $1.78 billion, helped by increased US brand investment and major global deals, including Aramco.

That explains why FIFA is so protective.

The World Cup is not just a football tournament.

It is a global sponsorship platform.

Every visible brand inside that platform either supports the value of the model or weakens it.

Which brings us back to Levi’s.

Levi’s should probably be annoyed.

It pays for the naming rights to one of the most recognisable stadiums in American sport, only for the venue to be temporarily renamed San Francisco Bay Area Stadium during the biggest football event on earth.

But the brand response has been excellent.

Instead of fighting the restriction, Levi’s turned the covered logo into content. The silhouette of the sign was still recognisable, the internet did the rest, and the brand joined the joke rather than pretending nothing had happened.

That is the lesson.

In modern sports marketing, speed matters.

Brands do not always need to own the official rights to be part of the conversation. They need to understand the rules, react quickly and find culturally relevant ways to show up without crossing the line.

Levi’s did that.

Lumen did something similar in Seattle, with its marketing team documenting the process of covering up its own branding.

Beats by Dre also benefited from the same dynamic when Jamal Musiala was seen covering the logo on his headphones with tape inside a World Cup environment.

The restriction became the campaign.

That is the strange irony of FIFA’s clean-stadium policy.

The more aggressively a brand is hidden, the more obvious the act of hiding can become.

For sponsors, this creates a new challenge.

Official partners are paying for clean, protected visibility. Non-sponsors are sometimes finding ways to generate attention through creativity, humour and speed.

That does not mean FIFA’s rules are failing.

Most non-official brands will still disappear from the tournament environment. The clean-stadium policy still protects the core commercial product. It still gives official sponsors the broadcast and venue environment they paid for.

But the Levi’s example shows that brand equity is not just about a logo being visible.

Sometimes, if a brand is strong enough, you can cover the name and people still know exactly who it is.

That is powerful.

And it is probably why we will see more of this over the rest of the tournament.

Brands will not be allowed to simply buy their way into the World Cup unless they are official partners.

But the smartest ones will look for the edges.

A covered sign.

A taped-over logo.

A viral player clip.

A strange stadium name.

A moment that looks like a restriction, but behaves like an opportunity.

FIFA is trying to protect the most valuable advertising environment in football.

“As a fan-owned club, Finn Harps relies heavily on voluntary effort at every level of its operation. That is something we are proud of, and it reflects the deep community roots of this club. But voluntary effort alone is not a sustainable foundation for a professional football club in the modern game. We need investment simply to stand still, and we need significantly more investment to grasp the opportunity that is now in front of us.”

That was an excerpt from the Statement to Shareholders and Supporters 20 June 2026 as Finn Harps confirmed they had received a formal expression of interest from a prospective external investor.

It is hard to argue with it.

For some clubs, takeover interest is just another news story. A new owner. A fresh injection of cash. A familiar line about ambition, infrastructure and long-term growth.

But Finn Harps are not most clubs.

They are one of the League of Ireland’s great community institutions. A Donegal club founded in 1954, elected to the League of Ireland in 1969, and still best known nationally for winning the FAI Cup in 1974.

Today, they play in the First Division.

They are also fan-owned.

And that is what makes this moment different.

Finn Harps have been owned by supporters since 1996, when the Finn Harps Co-Operative Society was formed after a failed takeover. At the time, supporter control was a way to protect the club. It kept Harps local, accountable and alive.

For almost three decades, that model has been part of the club’s identity.

But in 2026, the question is no longer simply whether fan ownership can preserve a football club.

It is whether fan ownership can still help one compete.

That is the tension sitting underneath the proposed investment.

Last year, Finn Harps tried to modernise the model. The club launched a new membership structure, allowing supporters to become part-owners for €25 per year. The target was ambitious: 3,000 members and a broader, more sustainable ownership base.

The response was strong.

Membership reportedly grew from around 700 to roughly 2,000.

But even that was not enough.

The board’s position is now clear. Fan ownership has served the club, but fan ownership alone cannot fund the next stage. Not if that next stage includes a new stadium, stronger football operations, full-time staff and a more professional structure around the club.

That is why the latest development matters.

On 20 June, Finn Harps confirmed that a prospective investor had submitted a serious and detailed proposal. The board said no transaction had been concluded, but it had unanimously agreed to put the proposal to shareholders.

Members will vote at a Special General Meeting on 5 July.

A 75% majority will be required.

That detail is important.

This is not simply a boardroom decision. It is not a takeover being announced over the heads of supporters. It is a fan-owned club asking its members whether the model that saved Finn Harps is still the model that can take it forward.

According to the Irish Examiner, the interested party is understood to be based in south-east Asia. The company has not been publicly confirmed. The same report said the deal is not part of a multi-club ownership play, and that the figure behind the proposal has a football background but would be entering club ownership for the first time.

If approved, it would be a landmark moment for the League of Ireland.

Not because Finn Harps would be the first club to attract outside money. That has already happened elsewhere. Drogheda United, Waterford and Cobh Ramblers have all shown how quickly external ownership has entered the domestic game.

But this would be different.

This would be a historically supporter-owned Donegal club potentially moving away from full fan ownership in order to compete in a league that is becoming more expensive, more professional and more attractive to international investors.

And, the stadium is central to all of this.

Finn Harps have been trying to deliver a new ground in Stranorlar for years. In December 2025, the club welcomed planning permission for the completion of the new stadium. The project has been described as a 5,580-capacity venue, with public funding already committed but a funding gap still to be closed.

That is where private capital changes the conversation.

The prospective investor has reportedly indicated a willingness to provide the club’s match-funding element for the stadium project. The proposal is also said to include increased resources for the playing squad, support for day-to-day operations and investment in full-time coaching and support staff.

That is the real business case.

This is not just about signing better players.

It is about whether Finn Harps can move from survival mode to infrastructure mode. From a club held together by community effort to one with the capital base to build, staff and compete properly.

That is the opportunity.

The risk is that supporter ownership is not just a financial structure. It is an emotional contract.

For many fans, the point of Finn Harps being fan-owned is not that it is the most efficient model. It is that the club belongs to the people who care about it most.

Once outside capital enters, that relationship changes.

It does not automatically disappear. It does not automatically become negative. But it changes.

That is why safeguards around the club’s name, identity and community role matter. It is also why the exact structure of the deal matters. Who controls what? What protections are permanent? What happens if the investor’s priorities change? What level of say, if any, do supporters retain?

League of Ireland clubs have already seen the upside and downside of outside ownership.

Drogheda United’s takeover by Trivela brought fresh capital and a more ambitious structure, but the club later lost its European place because of UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules relating to Trivela’s control of Silkeborg.

Cobh Ramblers also showed how quickly things can shift. Their move away from fan ownership under FC32 was described as potentially transformative, but that relationship unravelled within months before another investor came in.

None of this means Finn Harps should reject outside investment.

It means the identity of the investor, the governance terms and the long-term alignment matter as much as the money.

And that brings us back to the bigger question.

Can fan ownership still compete in the League of Ireland?

For years, the answer was yes, because survival itself was the competition. Clubs had to stay alive. They had to keep the lights on. They had to protect their place in the community.

Finn Harps did that.

Supporter ownership worked.

But the League of Ireland is no longer standing still. Clubs are investing in facilities, academies, coaching, operations and recruitment. Government funding has raised expectations around infrastructure. International investors are starting to see value in Irish football. The cost of standing still is rising.

That is the uncomfortable part.

The model that saved Finn Harps may not be the model that builds the next version of Finn Harps.

On 5 July, members are not just voting on an investor.

They are voting on what kind of club Finn Harps need to become.

The challenge is finding a way to bring in capital without losing the thing that made the club worth saving in the first place.

On Friday, Treaty United confirmed a move many Limerick supporters have wanted for years. The club announced it had entered into an agreement, in principle, to acquire the intellectual property associated with Limerick FC and, subject to the completion of the necessary formalities and approvals, to adopt the historic name from the start of the 2027 season.

The statement framed the move as “an important step toward unifying senior football in Limerick and creating a single identity and pathway for players, supporters, sponsors, and the wider football community throughout the Mid-West region.” As part of the transition, the Limerick FC academy sides, reinstated to the League of Ireland’s underage structure only last year, will be withdrawn before the second half of the season, with Treaty’s academy open to absorbing interested players in the upcoming window.

The headline is simple: one city, one club, one badge.

A Name Worth Reviving

To understand why this matters, you have to understand what is being reclaimed. Limerick FC, the “Super Blues,” were founded in 1937 and were the sole standard-bearer for senior football in the city for over eight decades. The honours back that up. Limerick won the League of Ireland title twice, in 1959–60 and again in 1979–80 under player-manager Eoin Hand. They lifted the FAI Cup twice, in 1971 and 1982, and added three League Cups along the way, the last in 2001–02.

There were European nights too. The club competed on the continent on six occasions, and while it never won a European tie, it produced moments that outlived the scorelines. There was a creditable draw away to a Southampton side featuring Kevin Keegan and Mick Channon. And then there was the night in 1980 when Limerick, drawn against Real Madrid in the European Cup, came within a disputed penalty of beating the aristocrats of the European game, a tie shifted to Lansdowne Road, where only 6,500 turned up to watch one of Irish football’s great near-misses.

That history ended, at least in name, in 2020. Years of financial trouble culminated in examinership, a points deduction, and the club’s failure to secure a licence for the 2020 season. From the wreckage came a new entity, which was forced to take the name Treaty United before a ball was kicked. For six seasons, Treaty have carried Limerick’s senior flag without Limerick’s name. This agreement closes that gap.

How And Why It Came About

The mechanics are straightforward enough. Treaty will acquire the Limerick FC intellectual property and, once the formalities and approvals are cleared, change its name for 2027. The framing from both sides is unity rather than takeover.

Pat O’Sullivan, the long-time owner of Limerick FC, put it in legacy terms. “After considerable reflection, I have come to believe that the greatest legacy we can leave is not preserving separate organisations, but creating the strongest possible future for the next generation of players and supporters,” he said, adding that he was “proud that the club’s history, traditions and identity will continue to play an important role in the future of football in Limerick.” Treaty United managing director Ian McMahon struck the same note: “We are honoured by the opportunity to become custodians of the Limerick FC name and heritage. This agreement is about bringing people together behind a common vision for football in Limerick.”

The timing is worth sitting with. Treaty are not coming into this from a position of strength on the pitch. After a respectable mid-table finish in 2025, they currently sit bottom of the ten-team First Division. For now, that carries no sporting punishment: 2026 is the inaugural season of the new FAI National League, the third tier of the Irish pyramid, and promotion and relegation between it and the First Division do not begin until 2027. From next season, though, the club that finishes bottom of the First Division can be dragged into a relegation play-off against the National League champions. In other words, Treaty’s current form is a free hit this year. From 2027, the very season the Limerick FC name returns, it will start to bite.

Why Getting This Done Matters

The first benefit is a pathway. Until now, a talented teenager in Limerick has faced a fork in the road: develop with Treaty, or with the Limerick FC academy sides that were only reinstated to the underage structure last year. A unified club removes that choice and gives a young player a single, legible route from the academy to the first team. In a city of Limerick’s size, where football has long ceded ground to GAA and Munster rugby, keeping local talent local is not a marginal gain. It is the difference between a club that develops its own players and one that watches them drift to Cork or Dublin by default.

The second is the end of fragmentation. For six years, Limerick has effectively run two football projects with a finite pool of players, sponsors, volunteers and attention. In a mid-sized Irish city, that duplication is not just wasteful, it is self-defeating: every euro and every volunteer hour spent maintaining two parallel structures is one not spent making either of them stronger. Consolidation pools those resources behind a single club, one that can now field teams across the full pyramid, without splitting the city against itself.

The third is brand and commercial pull. “Limerick FC” carries roughly ninety years of meaning, recognition and European pedigree, from league titles to that night against Real Madrid. Treaty United, by contrast, has spent six years building an identity almost from scratch in a league where commercial income is hard to come by. For a sponsor weighing up a jersey deal, a single historic name is a far easier sell than a young one still establishing itself, and for the lapsed Limerick FC supporters who never quite warmed to Treaty, the old crest is a reason to come back. A unified club with a recognisable badge is simply more sellable, on the pitch and on the balance sheet.

Why It’s Good For The League

Step back, though, and this is a rare piece of good news in a league too often defined by drift. The League of Ireland’s structural story is one of fragmentation, shaky finances, thin infrastructure and reform that arrives slowly, if at all. Against that backdrop, a club voluntarily simplifying itself, pooling resources, restoring a heritage name and building a single clear pathway, is the kind of proactive, sensible decision the league rarely gets to celebrate. It may not guarantee immediate success for Limerick FC next year. But in a league that badly needs examples of clubs getting their house in order rather than letting it fall down, one city choosing one club is a story worth telling.

On 11 June, a few minutes after Raúl Jiménez put Mexico 2-0 up against South Africa in the opening match of the World Cup, the referee Wilton Sampaio called a hydration break, and the United States broadcaster Fox cut away to advertisements. By the time it cut back, the players had returned, Sampaio had held South Africa's kickoff for around forty seconds, and play had resumed with an Adidas commercial featuring Lamine Yamal still running on screen.

Fox returned to the match ten seconds after the ball was back in play. American viewers missed the restart of a World Cup game because their broadcaster was still trying to fit in the spots it had sold: a Verizon advertisement with David Beckham, a Bank of America commercial, and the Adidas one. The break itself had been introduced, FIFA said, to protect the players.

A welfare measure with a gap in it

Hydration breaks are not new, and a struggling argument about player safety in extreme heat is not, on its own, a controversial thing to make. They were first used at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, called when pitch-side temperatures climbed above 32 degrees Celsius, and they were uncontroversial precisely because they were exceptional, triggered by conditions rather than scheduled into the run of play. What changed for 2026 is the structure. FIFA announced in December that it would introduce three-minute breaks midway through each 45-minute half of every match, and it removed the condition that previously justified them. In its own words, there would be “no weather or temperature condition in place, with the breaks being called by the referee in all games.” The measure was promoted as one of “player welfare.”

The welfare framing is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing, because parts of it hold up and parts do not. Players benefit from fluids and a pause in heat, and coaches value the window for instruction in a sport that otherwise denies them one. The difficulty is that the rule no longer tracks the conditions it was written for. Temperatures around the stadiums in the opening days ranged from roughly 10 to 27 degrees, and the breaks were called anyway: one after ten o’clock at night when Scotland played Haiti in Massachusetts, and another during the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan at AT&T Stadium, which is air-conditioned and has a roof. A measure justified by heat that is applied identically in the cold and indoors has come to serve some other purpose, and the question is whose.

Where the value sits

Three minutes in each half is six minutes per match, and across the 104 games of an expanded tournament that is more than ten hours of newly created stoppage, dropped into the middle of passages of play that previously could not be interrupted at all. Football’s commercial peculiarity has always been that it has nowhere to put advertising once the whistle blows. The two 45-minute halves run unbroken, which is why the sport sells sponsorship, pitch-side boards and shirt fronts rather than the in-game inventory that funds American sports. The hydration break does something a rights holder could not previously buy at any price: it opens a clean, predictable, mid-half window in which a broadcaster can cut to a full-screen advertisement and, in theory, not miss a goal. FIFA’s guidance allows four 30-second spots in each three-minute break, eight per match and, across 104 games, some 832 in-game commercials. At the roughly 300,000 dollars Fox is reported to be charging for a 30-second slot, Awful Announcing has estimated the network could take in upwards of 250 million dollars from the breaks, more than half of what it paid for the entire tournament.

According to The Athletic, citing three sources including one at FIFA, broadcasters were told the advertising should not begin within twenty seconds of the referee’s whistle and that they should return to the match feed at least thirty seconds before play resumes. Fox broke the second rule during the Mexico match. FIFA, according to The Guardian, has since accepted Fox’s explanation that it was late cutting to its commercials and then ran over, and will take no further action. The absence of a sanction is itself informative.

The same broadcaster’s coverage of the United States’ opener against Paraguay averaged 15.99 million viewers and peaked at 18.86 million, a record for a men’s World Cup match in the country, on a contract Fox secured for a relatively low 485 million dollars before the United States was confirmed as co-host, when FIFA was reportedly anxious to avoid litigation over moving the 2022 tournament to winter. A rights holder delivering record audiences, on a deal FIFA is content with, with new inventory it can finally sell, is not a party FIFA has much incentive to punish over ten seconds.

The sponsor sits a layer above all of this. The breaks are branded. Fox’s commentator Ian Darke introduced the Mexico stoppage to viewers with the line, “And that leads to the hydration break, powered to you by Powerade,” and inside the stadiums the screens read “Time for Hydration Break” in Powerade’s colours. Powerade is the official sports drink of the tournament, part of Coca-Cola’s FIFA partnership that runs back nearly five decades, which means the pause itself carries a sponsor’s name whether or not a given broadcaster cuts to an advertisement. Even the BBC, which does not break for commercials, shows viewers the Powerade screens in the stadium bowl. The welfare measure and the commercial asset are, structurally, the same object.

Same rule, different broadcasters

FIFA created the inventory but left the decision to sell it with each market, and the markets have split. Fox cut to roughly two minutes of advertising in each break, within the window it was allotted. In Germany, Magenta TV went to a full break; DAZN and beIN Sports have said they will air commercials market by market depending on demand. Against that, Telemundo, the Spanish-language rights holder in the United States, kept players on screen with an L-shaped graphic carrying a Lay’s advertisement around the edges and has said it will not cut away for the duration. ITV in the United Kingdom stayed with the players and commentators, constrained in any case by British rules limiting advertising minutes per broadcast hour; the BBC, Australian and Danish broadcasters, and Argentina’s DirecTV Sports all stayed with the feed, while Telefé in Argentina went to a full break. The rule is uniform. The behaviour is not, which means the cutaway is a commercial choice rather than a FIFA instruction, and each broadcaster is making it in public.

Ireland’s RTÉ illustrates the bind that choice creates. Its own pundit, the former footballer Richie Sadlier, objected on air during the opening game: “I can’t let the moment go without noting that this is my first experience watching a game of football that’s been broken in the first-half by advertisement breaks. I understand there’s a water break, I know that’s a decision taken externally, but ads during a match is wrong. It just is.” The broadcaster’s response conceded the discomfort while keeping the revenue: “RTÉ takes its commercial responsibilities seriously and seeks to strike an appropriate balance between generating revenue and delivering a high-quality viewing experience,” it said, adding that it had “made only limited use of the advertising capacity available during these breaks and does not anticipate extensive utilisation over the course of the tournament, in order to protect the viewer experience.” A broadcaster that intended to use the inventory freely would not promise restraint a week in.

The flow, the four quarters, and the cost

The objection that the breaks change the game itself is harder to wave away than the advertising complaint, because it concerns the sport rather than the screen. France’s Didier Deschamps put it plainly: “No matter which team, if they’re on a roll, three minutes ruin everything.” South Korea’s coach Hong Myung-bo made the same point from the players’ side, noting that his side “tend to reach their peak in terms of agility and performance around 20 minutes into a match, so it is disappointing to see the flow interrupted.” Virgil van Dijk, the Netherlands captain, was more guarded but landed in the same place, granting that “if it’s really hot, obviously it would be good to put them in” before adding, “But I think you have to look at it in every game, separately.” On ITV, the former England forward Ian Wright reduced the matter to its mechanism: “I just think it’s another way of getting adverts into it from an American point of view.” Even Carli Lloyd, the former United States international who now works as an analyst for Fox, posted three words on X: “I hate it.”

There is an honest counter-reading, and it does not come only from FIFA. The breaks hand coaches something the sport has never given them, a scheduled chance to reorganise mid-half, and at least one manager has welcomed it openly. Belgium’s Rudi Garcia said, “For me, it’s a coaching break more than a cooling break, so to me it’s very important,” before conceding the cost in the same breath: “Maybe if we are in a good moment, in a good flow, maybe it can interrupt.” That is the genuine tension. A pause that protects players in real heat and lets coaches coach is defensible; the same pause applied in 12-degree weather indoors, branded by a sponsor and sold by the minute, looks like something else wearing the welfare label. Both readings describe the identical three minutes.

Underneath is a question about how far a sport can be reshaped to fit the people who broadcast it. Football’s value, including the 485 million dollars Fox paid and the record audiences it is now drawing, rests on the product being what it is: continuous, unbroken, resistant to the stop-start rhythm of the leagues that carry American advertising. The hydration break, applied universally, edges the game toward four quarters, and the people objecting most loudly are the players, managers and pundits the broadcasters employ to make the product worth watching. If the inventory is this unpopular this early, disliked on air by a network’s own analysts, the advertising it carries inherits the hostility, and a brand may find that two minutes inside a resented break buys less goodwill than it cost.

So the measure can be read two ways at once. It is either a welfare rule broadcasters have opportunistically monetised, or commercial inventory that was always the point, dressed in the language of player protection. FIFA has not said which, and the gap between Telemundo’s restraint and Fox’s full breaks suggests it is content to let each market decide and absorb the criticism. The question worth turning over is not whether the breaks are good or bad for the players. It is this: if a sport’s appeal depends on it remaining uninterrupted, how much interruption can be sold before the thing being sold is no longer the same sport?

Origins and Evolution

Founded in 1904, OGC Nice is one of the oldest clubs in French football and a founding member of the French league system. The club enjoyed its golden era during the 1950s, winning four French league titles and establishing itself as a major force in the country. However, the decades that followed were marked by instability, financial difficulties and sustained periods outside the top flight.

Despite these challenges, Nice gradually rebuilt its status during the 2000s and 2010s. The move to the Allianz Riviera stadium in 2013 provided a modern home, while a strong recruitment strategy helped the club compete with wealthier rivals. Players such as Hatem Ben Arfa, Mario Balotelli and Jean Michaël Seri helped Nice qualify for European competitions and regain relevance on the national stage.

The club entered a new chapter in August 2019 when British petrochemicals giant INEOS, owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, completed its acquisition of OGC Nice. The company pledged “measured investment” and stated its ambition to transform Nice into a club capable of regularly competing in European competitions. The takeover generated excitement among supporters who believed the club could finally challenge the established powers of French football.

The INEOS Years

The early years of INEOS ownership brought increased spending and heightened expectations. Nice became significantly more active in the transfer market than ever before, targeting players with both immediate quality and long-term resale value.

Among the notable arrivals were Kasper Dolberg from Ajax (€20m), Calvin Stengs from AZ Alkmaar (€15m) and Amine Gouiri from Lyon (€7m). The club later invested heavily in players such as Jérémie Boga (Atalanta €17.5m), Sofiane Diop (Monaco €22m) and Gaëtan Laborde (Rennes €15m), while homegrown talents and smart acquisitions including Khéphren Thuram and Jean-Clair Todibo became key figures in the squad.

On the pitch, progress was visible. Nice regularly challenged for European qualification and reached the final of the Coupe de France in 2022. Under coaches such as Christophe Galtier and later Francesco Farioli, the club developed into one of Ligue 1’s most organised teams with three Top 5 finishes in four seasons. Although the club never reached the Champions League consistency promised by INEOS, it appeared to be moving in the right direction.

Downward Spiral

The optimism surrounding the INEOS project eventually faded. Frequent managerial changes, questionable recruitment decisions and the sale of key players weakened the squad. As attention increasingly shifted toward other INEOS sporting interests, particularly after the company became involved with Manchester United, many supporters felt Nice had lost strategic direction.

The 2025–26 season turned into a disaster. A campaign that began with hopes of competing in Europe quickly descended into a battle against relegation. Poor performances, injuries and instability both on and off the pitch left Nice hovering near the bottom of Ligue 1. Fan frustration exploded after the club finished 16th and were forced into a relegation playoff. Supporters protested against the ownership, management, and players, with unrest spilling into the Allianz Riviera.

Fortunately for Nice, they narrowly avoided relegation by defeating Saint-Étienne in the playoff and preserving their place in Ligue 1. However, survival did little to disguise what had become one of the most disappointing seasons in the club’s modern history. Many observers viewed it as the collapse of a project that once promised to challenge France’s elite.

OGC Nice’s journey from a historic and ambitious French club to the brink of relegation illustrates how quickly fortunes can change in modern football. The takeover in 2019 brought hope, investment and several exciting years of progress, but it ultimately failed to deliver the transformation many expected. After surviving the 2026 relegation scare, Nice now face a crucial period, and it remains to be seen whether INEOS will continue to fund the club’s growth and future development, or if the next chapter of Nice’s history will be their own to write.

1. Real Madrid and Emirates extend shirt sponsorship to 2031

Real Madrid and Emirates have renewed their partnership until 2031, extending one of the most valuable shirt sponsorship agreements in world football. Emirates will remain the club’s official main sponsor and official airline across the men’s and women’s teams, with branding continuing across match kits, training apparel and coaching staff clothing.

The relationship already dates back to 2011, with Emirates first becoming Real Madrid’s main shirt sponsor in 2013. The renewal means the partnership will approach two decades in length by the end of the new term, making it the longest-running shirt sponsorship in LaLiga history. For a club whose commercial model is built on global scale, that continuity matters.

The financial terms were not officially disclosed, but Spanish reporting has placed the value close to €100 million per season. That keeps Real Madrid at the very top of the European commercial table and sits alongside other major shirt-related revenues from Adidas and HP. In practice, Real Madrid’s shirt has become a portfolio of high-value commercial assets rather than a single sponsorship product.

2. Juventus appoint Giovanni Carnevali as CEO as Damien Comolli departs

Juventus have appointed Giovanni Carnevali as the club’s new Chief Executive Officer and General Manager, with Damien Comolli departing by mutual agreement. The club confirmed the move on 12 June 2026, with Carnevali also joining the board and formally taking up the general manager role from 15 June.

Carnevali arrives from Sassuolo, where he built a strong reputation as one of Italian football’s most effective operators. Sassuolo’s model has been based around player development, recruitment discipline, sustainability and trading upside. That makes his move to Juventus significant because the club are not simply replacing an executive. They are signalling a reset in operating philosophy.

Comolli’s departure comes after a short and turbulent spell in Turin. He joined Juventus in June 2025, later became CEO, and now exits after a difficult season in which the club failed to qualify for the Champions League. That matters financially. Missing out on Champions League revenue puts pressure on transfer spending, wage structure, commercial momentum and the wider rebuild under ownership.

3. FIFA and FIFPRO agree a new governance framework

FIFA and FIFPRO have signed a cooperation agreement that runs until 31 December 2031. The deal formally recognises FIFPRO as the global representative body for professional players and gives players a clearer role in FIFA’s governance structures.

The agreement creates a framework for future discussion between players, clubs and leagues on key issues such as transfer rules, welfare standards, mandatory rest periods and the international match calendar. It also includes a USD 20 million allocation for the FIFA Fund for Professional Players between 2026 and 2029, designed to support players who are unable to recover unpaid salaries from clubs.

The timing is important. The agreement came shortly after FIFA settled its legal dispute with former France midfielder Lassana Diarra, whose case had challenged parts of the transfer system in Europe. Under the new cooperation agreement, FIFPRO and its member unions will withdraw ongoing legal actions against FIFA and step back from supporting other claims.

4. FIFA adds Kraken to its World Cup commercial programme

FIFA has named Kraken as Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The agreement gives Kraken activation rights around the tournament across North America and Europe, with a focus on fan engagement and education around digital assets.

The deal lands as the 2026 World Cup becomes the biggest edition in the tournament’s history. The competition has expanded to 48 teams, 104 matches and 16 host cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico. That scale creates more inventory for FIFA to monetise across sponsorship, hospitality, ticketing, licensing and digital partnerships.

For Kraken, this is a global awareness play. Crypto brands pulled back from sports sponsorship after the collapse of several high-profile operators in the sector, but major sports properties remain attractive because they offer mainstream reach. A World Cup partnership gives Kraken visibility without the same week-to-week exposure as a club shirt deal.

5. Durham Women show the financial pressure inside women’s football

Durham Women have warned that the club could cease operations unless it secures urgent investment or a buyer. The WSL2 side said it needed a cash injection within 21 days to meet the financial demands of the competition and continue operating.

Durham’s situation is significant because the club is independent. Unlike many teams in the women’s game, it does not sit inside the structure of a major men’s club with access to wider group resources, shared facilities and established commercial departments. That makes the club more exposed as standards and costs rise.

The warning comes at a time when women’s football is attracting stronger valuations and more investor interest at the top end. But it also shows the pressure beneath the headline growth. Professionalisation brings opportunity, but it also brings higher operating costs, licensing expectations and the need for more sophisticated commercial models.

Late last month, a Sergio Ramos-led consortium's proposed takeover of Sevilla collapsed just days before the May 31 exclusivity deadline. On May 12 that the group, fronted by the 40-year-old former Real Madrid defender, had reached an agreement in principle to buy the Spanish club in a deal worth around €444 million. However, talks broke down after Ramos' team presented a dramatically revised offer in the final weeks of negotiations, and sources close to the selling side now consider the deal to be off entirely. For a club in desperate need of financial stability and a clear ownership structure, the collapse leaves Sevilla back at square one after five months of negotiations.

Ramos and Sevilla

To understand why this story captured so much attention in Spain, it helps to start with the man at the centre of it. Sergio Ramos is a product of Sevilla’s academy, having progressed through the youth ranks before making his first team debut in February 2004 at just 17 years of age. His performances quickly attracted the attention of Real Madrid, who signed him in 2005, and over the following 16 years he became one of the most decorated defenders in the history of the game, winning five league titles, four Champions Leagues and the 2010 World Cup with Spain. After two seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, Ramos returned to his boyhood club in 2023, adding to his Sevilla tally for a total of 87 appearances across his two spells. He left for Mexican side Monterrey in 2024 and has been a free agent since departing the club in December.

The club he sought to buy is in a very different place to the one he left in 2005. Sevilla spent the best part of two decades as the kings of the Europa League, winning the competition a record seven times and establishing themselves as one of the most consistently successful clubs in Spain outside the big two. But their finances have deteriorated badly in recent years. The club posted losses of €81.8 million in 2023-24 and took out a €108 million loan, organised by Goldman Sachs, in March 2024. Their ownership structure is also famously fragmented, split between several groups and families including the Del Nido family (24 per cent), the Sevillistas de Nervión group (22 per cent), former club president Rafael Carrión (15 per cent) and Sevillistas Unidos 2020 (15 per cent). A separate US investment group had entered a period of exclusivity to purchase the club last year before withdrawing from the process, so when Ramos emerged as the face of a new bid, there was both excitement and a degree of caution among supporters.

The January Bid

The Athletic reported at the beginning of January that Ramos was leading a €400 million bid to purchase Sevilla. Ramos was never going to be the largest investor in the takeover, but he was spearheading the bid as its public face, having worked with asset manager JB Capital Fund to find appropriate investors. The group he chose was Five Eleven Capital, headed by Martin Ink and backed by US investment. Ramos travelled to Seville with his legal team that month to meet with some of the club’s shareholders, and by the end of January the consortium had submitted a letter of intent, opening a three-month period of exclusivity to complete the purchase.

Even at that early stage, there were warning signs. The takeover remained subject to due diligence on the financial health of the club, and significant uncertainty surrounded the valuation of Sevilla’s debt, which club sources suggested could be around €180 million pending an external audit commissioned by the bidders. There was no guarantee the deal would be completed, but the direction of travel appeared positive, and the prospect of a club legend leading an institutional rebuild generated genuine optimism around the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

A Deal All But Done

By mid May, the takeover looked close to completion. On May 12 that an agreement in principle worth around €444 million had been reached, following the completion of due diligence and a marathon round of negotiations with shareholders that lasted between eight and ten hours. The terms involved the Ramos-backed consortium acquiring 85 per cent of the club’s shares for €275 million, while also assuming €85 million in debt and committing to an €80 million capital increase. The deadline to complete the purchase was expected to fall around late May or early June, and although the consortium still needed to provide the required capital to move forward, a financial guarantee had been presented.

The backdrop on the pitch made the deal feel all the more urgent. Sevilla sat 13th in La Liga at the time, just three points above the relegation zone with three games remaining, and club sources estimated that relegation to the Segunda División would wipe 20 to 30 per cent off the club’s value. Club sources also told The Athletic that the net debt was estimated at around €90 million, an amount that would need to be deducted from the final price. With the season winding down and the exclusivity window closing, everything pointed towards a summer of transition under new ownership.

The Collapse

After several meetings between the two parties over the final two weeks of May, Ramos’ team arrived at a meeting on May 27 with a new offer that substantially altered the terms under which the preliminary agreement had been reached. Instead of buying 85 per cent of the club outright, the consortium, now comprising Ramos, the Five Eleven fund and a group of Mexican investors, proposed buying a smaller stake in stages while contributing more money through capital increases. The revised structure involved an initial offer of €100 million for just 18 per cent of the club’s shares, with the group then gradually increasing its stake to 60 per cent through capital increases, starting with €120 million to take the stake to 42 per cent and a controlling position.

According to sources close to Ramos, the new proposal totalled €335 million, structured as €120 million in a capital increase, €133 million paid directly to shareholders and €82 million in deferred payments. His side argued the offer was actually worth more as a proportion, with the group effectively putting in €192.6 million for 60 per cent of the club’s equity value against the €272.85 million previously proposed for 85 per cent. The bid also reportedly had the backing of Santander, and sources within La Liga noted that the €120 million capital increase would roughly correspond to the club’s losses over the last four years, rebalancing the accounts and significantly improving Sevilla’s financial fair play position.

The shareholders saw it very differently. To them, the new proposal represented a step down from the initial offer, leaving the holders of roughly 54,000 shares outside the transaction entirely while handing the consortium greater control for less money up front. Some felt the offer was not backed by half of the required guarantees and questioned whether the financial strength promised at the beginning of the process truly existed, claims that sources close to Ramos deny. Reports in the Spanish press suggested some shareholders privately labelled the proposal unacceptable, and with the exclusivity deadline of May 31 only days away, sources on both sides left the final meeting feeling the situation would be very difficult to salvage. The selling side now considers the negotiations to be over.

Where Do We Go From Here?

For Sevilla, the immediate priority has not changed. The club urgently needs fresh capital, and the capital increase element of any deal matters as much as the headline price, given the scale of the losses accumulated over the past four years. Sevilla’s ownership group is reportedly already considering another takeover proposal, with new investors said to have shown interest in entering negotiations, though any new process will take months at a time when the club can ill afford further uncertainty. Having survived a relegation scare this season, the squad needs investment, and the longer the ownership question drags on, the harder that becomes.

For Ramos, the episode is a bruising end to what was meant to be a homecoming story. He is reportedly considering holding a press conference to explain his side of the situation, and given the conflicting accounts of how the deal fell apart, his version of events will be worth hearing. Whether the collapse came down to a funding shortfall or a deliberate change in strategy remains the central unanswered question. What is clear is that a takeover which began with a club legend promising to restore Sevilla to their former glories has ended with frustrated shareholders, a club still searching for investment, and a fanbase left wondering what might have been.

A Category 4 ticket to a group-stage match at Qatar 2022 cost eleven dollars. Not a typo. Eleven. At the same tournament, a seat to watch the final (arguably the greatest World Cup final in the competition’s history) could be had for around $1,600. Those prices were fixed, transparent, and announced well in advance. Fans could plan. Budgets could be set.

For the 2026 World Cup, FIFA has introduced dynamic pricing for the first time. As of this writing, a ticket to the final at MetLife Stadium is listed officially at $10,990 in the top category. On the resale market, the same seat is touching $33,000.

Dynamic Pricing Summarised

Dynamic pricing is a revenue model borrowed from airlines, hotels, and concert promoters. Prices are not fixed at the point of sale. Instead, they move in real time based on demand, inventory, and an algorithm FIFA controls but does not publicly explain. As demand rises, the price rises with it. As inventory thins, the same effect applies. The headline justification is efficiency: prices reflect what the market will bear, scalpers are theoretically undercut because the official price tracks market value, and revenue is maximised.

FIFA’s formal position is more cautious. The organisation has stated it is not running a “dynamic pricing model” in the fully automated sense, that prices will not be adjusted in real time by algorithm alone, but will instead be reviewed manually across sales phases as demand becomes clear. That distinction matters less than it sounds. The practical effect is the same: a ticket sold in January for $300 may cost $700 by March for the same seat at the same match, with no structural ceiling. The US regulatory environment, which has far looser ticket-pricing laws than Europe, is what made this possible at a World Cup for the first time. FIFA chose a host nation and three host nations, with 78 of 104 matches played in the US, where this model could legally operate at scale.

The 15% commission FIFA charges on its official resale platform compounds the problem. Fans who need to sell a ticket they can no longer use, or who are buying on the secondary market, pay an additional premium on top of a price that may already have moved significantly since the original sale. The incentive structure, for the first time in World Cup history, now actively rewards holding tickets rather than using them.

Qatar 2022 versus now: what the numbers actually show

In Qatar, the cheapest Category 4 group-stage ticket was $11 for residents and $69 for international fans. The most expensive group-stage seat in Category 1 ran to $210. Those were fixed prices. You knew what you were paying and when, and the FIFA resale platform charged no commission. The final, in Category 1, peaked at around $1,600 — the most expensive seat in the tournament.

For 2026, group-stage prices in Category 1 opened around $500 and have since moved higher for high-demand fixtures. Category 4 starts officially at $60 but that figure is largely notional for the matches that anyone with a genuine interest in attending actually wants to see. The final’s Category 1 ticket launched at $6,730 — already four times Qatar’s equivalent — before FIFA revised it upward to $10,990 as demand was assessed. The resale premium on top of that takes the effective cost for many buyers past $30,000.

The range across the full tournament is now so wide, $60 to $10,990 on the official platform alone, and multiples beyond that in secondary markets, that a single headline figure no longer meaningfully describes what it costs to attend. That ambiguity is itself part of the story. Fans cannot plan with confidence because the price they see today may not be the price they pay tomorrow, and the price they pay tomorrow may not be the price their neighbour paid last week for the same seat.

The attorneys general of New York and New Jersey have issued a subpoena to FIFA over ticket-pricing practices. Peter Moore, the former Liverpool CEO, described the model publicly as “dystopian.” As of early June 2026, Fortune has reported that the dynamic pricing approach may be backfiring as some ticket categories have actually dropped in price as demand proved softer than FIFA anticipated, suggesting the system is not functioning even as designed.

Why this is happening and what it signals for the sport

The economics of football have been moving in this direction for some time. Dynamic pricing is not a FIFA invention; it is a natural extension of the commercialisation logic that has been reshaping top-level football for thirty years. What is new is the scale of its application at the sport’s most watched single event, and the explicit choice to prioritise revenue capture over access.

The argument FIFA makes, that dynamic pricing pushes prices toward market value and undercuts scalpers, collapses when you examine the incentive structure. FIFA controls both the official price and the official resale platform, collecting commission on both. The scalper is not the problem being solved; the scalper’s margin is simply being absorbed by the organiser. The fan who wants to attend pays the same inflated price either way. What changes is who captures the premium: in the old model, touts got it. In the new model, FIFA does. Framing this as a consumer-protection measure is, to be direct about it, a misrepresentation.

The deeper signal is structural. Qatar was anomalous in ways that are easy to forget: a small country, a concentrated venue footprint, a government with reasons to keep ticket prices accessible and a large local workforce that could fill stadiums at low cost. Those conditions don’t travel. The 2026 model, a commercially sophisticated North American market, three host nations, eleven cities, 104 matches, and a governing body under financial pressure, was always going to look different. But the degree to which it looks different is still striking. An eleven-dollar ticket in 2022. A thirty-three-thousand-dollar seat in 2026. Four years. The same tournament.

The question for the longer term is whether the fan experience, the actual attendance of actual supporters, is a component the sport’s commercial structure still needs, or whether it has become incidental to a media-rights and sponsorship model that no longer requires full stadiums of people who genuinely care about the game. Dynamic pricing, at this scale, suggests the latter. The $33,000 seat is not priced for a football fan. It is priced for a hospitality buyer, a corporate entertainment budget, or a collector of experiences. Those buyers exist. Whether their presence produces the atmosphere, the context, and the cultural weight that makes the World Cup worth broadcasting is the question nobody at FIFA appears to be asking.

Premier League Winners and UCL Qualification

In 2016, Leicester stunned the football world by winning the Premier League. Led by key players such as Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, and N’Golo Kanté under the wisdom and guile of Claudio Ranieri, the Foxes combined teamwork, organisation, and counter-attacking football to finish ten points clear at the top of the table. Their title win is widely regarded as one of the greatest upsets in football history. As champions, Leicester qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time and reached the quarter-finals in the 2016–17 season, further enhancing the club’s reputation.

However, success brought new challenges. Leicester struggled to retain some of their star players, with Kanté leaving for Chelsea shortly after the title win. Although the club invested heavily in new signings the following season including the likes of Wilfred Ndidi, Islam Slimani and Ahmed Musa, many transfers failed to match the quality of the departing players and they followed up their title win with a 12th place finish. While Leicester remained competitive over the seasons that followed and even won the FA Cup in 2021, recruitment became increasingly inconsistent. Expensive signings did not always deliver value for money, and wages rose significantly. The club moved away from the smart recruitment model that had helped create their title-winning team, planting the seeds for future problems.

The club also suffered a devastating tragedy in October 2018 when club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was killed in a helicopter crash outside the King Power Stadium shortly after a match. Vichai had played a crucial role in the club’s rise to Premier League champions, and his death was a significant emotional blow to the players, staff, and supporters.

Relegation Spiral

After years of competing in the top half of the Premier League, Leicester’s performances began to decline. The 2022–23 season ended in disappointment as the club was relegated from the Premier League after nine consecutive years in the top flight. Despite possessing a squad filled with experienced international players, Leicester struggled defensively and failed to maintain consistency throughout the campaign. The relegation came as a shock considering the club had won the FA Cup only two years earlier and had regularly challenged for European qualification.

Although Leicester immediately returned to the Premier League by winning promotion from the Championship under Enzo Maresca, their problems had not disappeared. Financial pressures limited the club’s ability to strengthen the squad, and key players continued to leave. Their return to the Premier League was short-lived, as another poor season resulted in relegation back to the Championship. Consecutive managerial changes created instability, while recruitment decisions failed to address weaknesses within the team. What had once been one of the Premier League’s most admired clubs was now facing a second successive relegation battle.

Financial Issues, Points Deduction and Relegation (again)

The most damaging aspect of Leicester City’s decline was their financial situation. In an effort to remain competitive after their years of success, the club accumulated substantial losses and maintained a wage bill that became increasingly difficult to sustain. Reports showed Leicester recorded losses exceeding £200 million across several seasons, placing them under scrutiny for breaches of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

In 2025 and 2026, Leicester faced disciplinary action relating to financial rule breaches. Following investigations, the club received a six-point deduction for violating PSR regulations during the 2023–24 season. The punishment left them dangerously close to the Championship relegation zone and significantly damaged their chances of survival. Leicester appealed the decision but were unsuccessful.

The consequences were severe. In April 2026, Leicester City were officially relegated from the Championship to League One, becoming one of the few former Premier League champions ever to fall into England’s third tier. Their relegation was made even more remarkable by the fact that it occurred only ten years after their historic title triumph. The points deduction contributed to the club’s struggles, but poor performances on the pitch and years of financial mismanagement were equally responsible. Leicester’s fall from Premier League champions to League One has become one of the most dramatic declines in English football history.

Leicester City’s story is a powerful reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in football. Their incredible Premier League title win in 2016 showed that determination, smart recruitment, and strong leadership could overcome enormous odds. Yet the years that followed highlighted the importance of financial sustainability and long-term planning. Poor transfer decisions, mounting losses, and regulatory breaches gradually undermined the club’s success, leading to relegation from the Premier League and eventually to League One. While Leicester’s rise will forever be remembered as one of football’s greatest achievements, their fall demonstrates that even the most extraordinary success can be difficult to sustain without careful management and financial discipline.

1. FIFA secures last-minute India broadcast deal with Zee

FIFA has closed one of the biggest remaining broadcast gaps before the 2026 World Cup, announcing a deal with Zee Entertainment on June 1 to bring the tournament to India. The agreement covers the 2026 World Cup, the 2027 Women’s World Cup, the 2030 World Cup and a wider portfolio of FIFA competitions through 2034. In total, Zee will distribute 39 FIFA events across men’s, women’s, youth, futsal and intercontinental competitions.

The timing is commercially significant. The deal was announced just 10 days before the tournament begins across the United States, Canada and Mexico on June 11. Reuters reported that FIFA had initially sought around $100 million for the India package before reducing expectations to around $60 million, while Zee shares rose about 7 percent after the announcement.

For Zee, this is a major play in Indian sports media. The company will show matches across UNITE8 Sports linear channels and Zee5, using the World Cup as an anchor property in a market where premium sports rights have increasingly shaped subscriber acquisition and platform positioning. FIFA called India strategically important because of its young audience and multi-platform growth potential.

2. Glazer family members consider Manchester United stake sale

Manchester United’s ownership picture may be shifting again. Reuters reported on June 3 that several members of the Glazer family are considering selling part or all of their stake in the club. Insider Sport reported the following day that discussions remain internal and that there is no indication of a formal sale process.

The commercial context is clear. The Glazers still control United through a dual-class share structure, where Class B shares carry ten votes compared with one vote for Class A shares. Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed a deal in 2024 to acquire a 29 percent stake for around £1.4 billion, while also taking control of football operations.

United remain one of football’s most valuable assets despite years of fan unrest and infrastructure questions. Insider Sport cited a current market valuation of approximately £2.7 billion, or $3.6 billion. Any stake sale would likely involve a premium because control of Manchester United is not priced like a normal listed equity position.

3. FCA warns Premier League clubs over crypto and trading sponsors

The UK Financial Conduct Authority has warned football clubs about sponsorship deals with unauthorised financial firms, including crypto businesses and trading platforms. The FCA published the warning on June 3 and said it had written directly to football clubs, mainly in the Premier League.

The timing is important because Premier League clubs are preparing for a major shirt-sponsorship reset. From August 2026, gambling brands will no longer be allowed on Premier League front-of-shirt inventory. That creates a commercial gap, and financial services, crypto and trading brands have been seen as possible replacements because of their appetite for global exposure.

The FCA’s message was direct. It said unauthorised firms may be using club sponsorship to target fans, and warned clubs that these deals could expose them to legal liability, money laundering risks and reputational damage. The regulator also said it expects clubs to conduct due diligence before signing and throughout the partnership.

4. Champions League final delivers 7m UK viewers, but piracy problem grows

The 2026 Champions League final delivered a major UK audience for TNT Sports, with SportsPro reporting more than 7 million viewers for the live broadcast. The final, between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, was the first Champions League final to be shown exclusively behind a paywall in the UK.

That number reinforces the value of premium European club football to pay-TV operators. English club involvement helped drive audience demand, but the wider point is that the Champions League final remains one of the few football properties capable of pulling national-scale attention even when access is restricted.

The challenge is piracy. SportsPro also reported significant illegal streaming around the match, highlighting the risk broadcasters face when the biggest football events move away from free-to-air windows. For rights holders, it is a reminder that exclusivity can protect subscription value, but it can also push some viewers outside the paid ecosystem.

5. Real Madrid top Forbes valuation ranking at $9.5bn

Real Madrid have been named the world’s most valuable football club by Forbes for the fifth consecutive year, according to Off The Pitch. The club was valued at $9.5 billion, with 2024/25 revenue of $1.27 billion. Barcelona ranked second at $7.5 billion.

The ranking also underlined the concentration of value in English and American football markets. The top 30 clubs had a combined value of $87 billion, with an average valuation of $2.9 billion. The Premier League contributed 11 clubs, while MLS had seven representatives.

Real Madrid’s position shows how elite football valuations are no longer purely tied to short-term sporting performance. Global brand equity, stadium economics, commercial partnerships, digital reach and institutional stability all matter. The Bernabéu redevelopment has also strengthened Madrid’s long-term stadium-led revenue story.

Forbes put Lionel Messi’s earnings at around $135 million in 2025. That number gets all the attention. Here is the one that actually matters: €86.2 million in image-rights income, in a single year, up sixty percent, flowing through a Spanish family holding company most people have never heard of.

The playing contract is now the smaller half of the story. And most of the coverage misses this, because the coverage is still organised around the athlete rather than the architecture.

Messi and his people have spent the last three to four years quietly building something that does not look like a conventional sports empire. There is no Messi Holdings Inc. in a clean corporate tree. What exists instead is an intellectual-property ecosystem, his name, his likeness, and the commercial leverage of a still-active playing career sitting at the centre of it, with layers of licensing, real estate, consumer products, venture bets and media rights orbiting around that core. The cleanest window into how it actually concentrates money is Limecu España 2010, his family holding vehicle. Spanish business reporting puts its 2023 revenue at €109.3 million. The image-rights line alone is bigger than what most full football clubs earn from kit sponsorship. That is the engine. Everything else feeds off it.

The Miami move is where the architecture changed shape, and it was not a retirement lap. Reuters’ reporting on the 2023 deal described a revenue share from Apple’s MLS Season Pass, the ability to fully exploit his Adidas relationship, and a path to future ownership. The salary, $20.4 million annually, the highest in MLS, was almost beside the point. What actually changed was the alignment of his incentives. From that moment, Messi’s financial interests stopped tracking his wages and started tracking league growth, streaming subscriptions, merchandise and sponsor inventory across an entire continent. In January 2026, Reuters confirmed the deal includes a future minority stake in Inter Miami. The club was valued at $1.19 billion in 2025. By 2026 that figure had reached $1.45 billion. A quarter of a billion dollars of paper value added in twelve months, on a franchise that had almost no continental footprint before he arrived.

Step out from the cash engine and the picture gets more interesting. The real-estate side runs through Edificio Rostower SOCIMI, listed late last year at a €223 million equity valuation, with hotels, offices and apartments across Spain, Andorra, London and Paris. The MiM Hotels brand sits inside that structure, managed since late 2025 by Meliá. In May 2026 the trust added another Barcelona building for €11.5 million. The consumer side is anchored by Más+ by Messi, the hydration drink he co-founded in 2024 with Mark Anthony Group. By last August it was in Walmart stores nationally. MLS named it the league’s official hydration partner. The logic is plain: use the football halo he has just amplified across North America to build a consumer brand that outlives the playing career.

The apparel story is more instructive. Between 2018 and 2021, the lifestyle-apparel line ran through a licensing deal with MGO Global. By 2023, MGO was carrying $7.14 million in net losses against $5.36 million in revenue. Messi’s side kept the intellectual property, moved the risk to a better-capitalised partner in Centric Brands, and collected the cheque. The IP owner wins even when the operating partner is struggling. That is the model in one sentence.

The venture fund, Play Time, describes itself as a $200 million fund and incubation studio. The content studio, 525 Rosario, launched in September 2024 with Smuggler Entertainment to cover television, film and live sport. In April 2026 he formally acquired UE Cornellà, the Spanish club. He has a stake in Deportivo LSM in Uruguay alongside Suárez. Reuters has already reported his stated ambition to own a club after retirement. The recent moves point exactly that way.

The pessimistic version of all this is overextension. Rostower has widening losses. The hotel count in public filings is ambiguous in ways that suggest family-office complexity rather than clean corporate structure. The smaller Messi-branded retail vehicles have a mixed track record. Brand power does not eliminate execution risk, and the whole platform is held together by fame that has not yet been tested without a live playing career to sustain it.

That is the tension at the heart of the story. Más+, 525 Rosario and UE Cornellà are all bets that the commercial gravity survives the retirement. History says it usually diminishes. What Messi’s team seem to be doing is building enough owned infrastructure: the rights machine, the real-estate trust, the consumer brand, the club that the platform can carry itself on fundamentals rather than purely on fame.

Whether that is true will take a decade to find out. But the pace at which he is building it, while still playing at elite level, is the part of this story that tends to get lost inside the Forbes headline.

But it wasn’t always like this. VfL Wolfsburg emerged as one of Germany’s most exciting clubs in the late 2000s and early-to-mid 2010s, boasting standout talents such as Kevin De Bruyne, Edin Džeko and Grafite. Through astute recruitment, innovative tactical approaches and strong leadership, Die Wölfe established themselves as genuine contenders to Bayern Munich’s domestic dominance, and their rise reached its peak with a historic Bundesliga triumph in 2009, cementing their place among the country’s elite clubs.

However, despite being backed by Volkswagen and possessing advantages that many clubs could only dream of, Wolfsburg gradually lost their way. Poor recruitment, unstable leadership and a lack of tactical consistency ultimately transformed one of Germany's most ambitious clubs into a side battling for survival and, eventually, relegation.

Poor Recruitment & Succession

One of the biggest factors behind Wolfsburg’s rise was their intelligent recruitment. During their most successful years, the club consistently identified talented players who could improve the team immediately while also increasing in value. Signings like Kevin De Bruyne, Ivan Perišić, Ricardo Rodríguez, Luiz Gustavo, and Bas Dost helped create a squad capable of competing with Germany’s elite. These signings provided a balance of creativity, leadership, technical quality, and goals, allowing Wolfsburg to establish themselves as a genuine force in the Bundesliga.

The problems began when those key players departed. De Bruyne’s move to Manchester City in 2015 was particularly damaging, as Wolfsburg struggled to replace one of the world’s best creative midfielders. While significant sums were reinvested into new signings, many failed to deliver the same impact. Big signings such as Mario Gómez and Julian Draxler arrived with high expectations but struggled within an unstable system. Recruitment became increasingly reactive rather than strategic, with the club spending heavily on short-term solutions rather than building a sustainable long-term project. Frequent squad turnover prevented chemistry from developing, while expensive transfers often failed to fit the team’s tactical requirements. What had once been a recruitment model built on careful planning gradually became a source of instability, weakening the foundations that had driven Wolfsburg’s success.

Leadership and Management

During the club’s most successful periods, there was a clear vision from both executives and sporting directors. Volkswagen’s financial backing allowed the club to compete for top talent, while experienced figures behind the scenes ensured that investment translated into success on the pitch. Stability within the boardroom helped create a culture of ambition and progression.

However, as performances declined, leadership became increasingly inconsistent. Sporting directors came and went, strategies shifted, and long-term planning was often sacrificed in favour of immediate results. The Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal also created uncertainty around the club’s broader direction, even if financial support remained strong.

Perhaps most damaging was the revolving door of managers. Since their title-winning season in 2009 under Felix Magath, Wolfsburg have employed numerous coaches, each bringing different philosophies and tactical approaches. Coaches like Steve McClaren, Dieter Hecking, Oli Glasner and Niko Kovač all attempted to rebuild, and while some briefly restored stability, repeat changes led heavily to Wolfsburg’s decline and relegation. This lack of continuity ultimately contributed to years of underachievement and declining standards, and the club failed repeatedly to get even close to the levels they had reached just a decade previously.

Tactics and Performances

At their peak, Wolfsburg possessed a clear and effective tactical identity. Under Dieter Hecking, the team became known for aggressive pressing, quick transitions, and devastating counterattacks. Kevin De Bruyne’s creativity combined with the pace and movement of those around him made Wolfsburg one of Europe’s most exciting teams to watch. Their performances during the 2014-15 season, including a second-place Bundesliga finish and a DFB-Pokal triumph, demonstrated how effective this approach could be.

Following Hecking’s departure, tactical consistency disappeared. Successive managers introduced different systems, formations, and playing styles, often without the squad being properly suited to those changes. Players struggled to adapt, performances became increasingly inconsistent, and confidence began to erode. Rather than building upon previous successes, the club repeatedly reset its tactical direction. This constant disruption made it difficult for players to develop clear roles or establish strong partnerships on the pitch. As performances deteriorated, Wolfsburg shifted from competing for European football to fighting relegation, highlighting how quickly fortunes can change when a club loses its footballing identity.

The rise and fall of VfL Wolfsburg serves as a reminder that financial power alone does not guarantee sustained success. Smart recruitment, strong leadership, and tactical clarity helped transform Wolfsburg into Bundesliga champions and Champions League contenders. Yet when those foundations began to crumble, the club struggled to maintain its position among Germany’s elite and have paid a heavy price for years of instability and poor decision making.

Yet despite their recent difficulties, Wolfsburg still possess the resources and infrastructure needed for recovery. Volkswagen’s financial support, strong academy infrastructure and modern facilities give the club advantages few of their competitors can match. The future, however, will depend on stable leadership, smarter recruitment and a return to a clear footballing identity.

If they can rediscover the stability and vision that once defined them, their stay in the second tier should in theory be short-lived; a wolf may stumble, but it never forgets how to hunt.

For years, the benchmark for a major League of Ireland transfer seemed almost impossibly low by modern football standards. When Seamus Coleman left Sligo Rovers for Everton in 2009, the initial fee was reported to be just €60,000, a figure that turned out to be one of the biggest bargain signings in Premier League history considering he went on to make over 370 appearances, become a Premier League and International captain, and turn into one of Ireland’s greatest ever players of the modern era. Coleman’s story has long been used as an example of the League of Ireland’s ability to produce and develop talent, but recent transfer activity suggests the league is finally beginning to receive financial recognition that better reflects the quality of players it produces.

Reality Check

Context is important here. Mason Melia’s recent move from St. Patrick’s Athletic to Tottenham Hotspur marked the first time a player from the League of Ireland was sold for a fee above €1 million. The first €100k+ transfer took place in 2001 (Richie Foran from Shelbourne to Carlisle United), and the first €10k transfer was back in 1986 when Roddy Collins left Dundalk FC for Mansfield Town. For comparison, the British transfer record at that time was Bryan Robson’s £1.5m move from West Brom to Manchester United.

That €10k figure was broken twice that same year, firstly by Steve Staunton’s €30k move from Dundalk to Liverpool, then again when Liam O’Brien joined Man Utd from Shamrock Rovers for €65k. His record stood for 14 years until Damien Delaney’s €75k move from Cork City to Leicester City, the Corkman later joining Ipswich for €1.1m which clearly highlights the understated fees for League of Ireland players at the time. Fast forward to 2007 and Roy O’Donovan became the first Irish-based player to cost €500k when he moved from Cork City to Sunderland, a record that lasted until 2021 when Liam Scales joined Celtic from Shamrock Rovers.

These fees are relatively miniscule in the context of Premier League spending, as well as in comparison to the impact some of these players went on to make in England and beyond. Shane Long joined Reading for a reported €75k from Cork City, going on to play for several Premier League clubs and to this day holds the record for the fastest-ever goal in England’s top tier. The same can be said for Kevin Doyle, who played at the top level for club and country but only cost €100k when he moved across the Irish sea. For a long period, the best young Irish players were usually snapped up by English clubs from an early age, thus rendering the possibility of a lucrative transfer free null and void for many Ireland-based clubs. However, changes to transfer rules for young players along with Brexit barriers which prevent players from joining until their 18th birthday mean that League of Ireland clubs now have a much stronger position when it comes to transfer negotiations.

A Seismic Shift

The trend began to change as clubs became more professional and increasingly willing to hold firm during negotiations. Shamrock Rovers’ sale of Gavin Bazunu to Manchester City and Liam Scales’ move to Celtic represented significant milestones, with Scales’ reported €600,000 transfer becoming the league benchmark for several years. Those deals demonstrated that League of Ireland clubs could extract meaningful value from homegrown players, but even then the figures remained modest compared to those regularly paid elsewhere in Europe. Now in recent seasons we see a gradual uptick in transfer fees for League of Ireland players which gives a much more accurate representation of the quality and potential of these talents developed on home soil - Owen Elding from Sligo Rovers to HIbernian for €400k, Naj Razi joining Como from Shamrock Rovers for €500k, Josh Honohan’s move from Shamrock Rovers for Lincoln City also for €500k, and even recently with Dundalk’s Vinnie Leonard who will join Norwich on July 1st for a fee of €700k

The dramatic increase in transfer fees is closely linked to the wider growth of the League of Ireland itself. Attendances have risen significantly, European performances have improved, and clubs have invested more heavily in facilities, academies and player development. The league is no longer viewed simply as a stepping stone where promising teenagers can be picked up cheaply. Instead, clubs are producing technically accomplished players capable of competing in European competitions and attracting interest from some of the biggest teams in England. Brexit has also played a role, forcing English clubs to wait longer before signing Irish prospects and allowing League of Ireland sides to develop players further before they move abroad. As a result, clubs have gained greater leverage in negotiations and are increasingly rewarded for the work done at academy level. The combination of stronger youth development systems and improved financial stability has elevated both the reputation and the market value of League of Ireland talent.

Shining Lights

No player embodies this new era more than Mason Melia. Tottenham Hotspur agreed a deal worth an initially reported €1.8 million for the St Patrick’s Athletic striker, making him the first League of Ireland player to break through the million-euro barrier.
